CARDEX BACKGROUND
On ancient tablets, Unown's shapes resemble carved symbols. Yet the Pokédex leaves a question unanswered: did these forms inspire language, or did writing exist before them? Each shape deepens the sense of reading a message without knowing how to decipher it. Unown's story lies in this mystery, somewhere between a living creature and a character from a forgotten alphabet.
Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.A lone Unown seems to cause no unusual phenomenon. According to the Pokémon Black Pokédex, a mysterious power appears when several gather together. This difference between being alone and being in a group adds another puzzle to their letter-like forms. The game describes the phenomenon without explaining exactly how it works.
Quoted source text is retained in the card’s printed language so this exact printing can be identified. The CarDex background above is translated into English.
