CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

Darkrai can put humans and Pokémon approaching its territory to sleep, then fill their dreams with nightmares to drive them away. Another entry presents this faculty as a means of defence when it feels threatened. The Pokémon’s unsettling appearance thus conceals a logic of protection and distance. The Pokédex also places its appearances on nights of the new moon. Darkrai’s stories therefore combine a specific time of appearance with a power capable of affecting the sleep of those who approach.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Y places Darkrai’s appearances on nights of the new moon. This detail gives a setting to its stories of troubled sleep: its appearance is associated with a specific point in the lunar cycle. The Pokédex identifies a period of appearance without claiming that all nightmares come from it.
