CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

Lanturn illuminates the ocean depths with the antenna on its head. Bacteria there react with its bodily fluids and produce light visible even from the surface. It uses this to dazzle prey before delivering an electric shock. Sailors looking at the sea at night may mistake these lights for underwater stars. Its nickname, the “Deep-Sea Star”, thus comes from a hunting tool becoming a distant spectacle.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Sword states that Lanturn’s light remains visible at the surface while it swims 5,000 metres deep. Pokémon Ultra Sun attributes this brightness to bacteria in its antenna. In the Pokédex, the phenomenon relies on a relationship with other living beings.
