CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

Qwilfish rapidly swallows a large amount of water to inflate its body against a larger enemy. The resulting pressure lets it fire the toxic spines formed from its scales. Yet this inflation hinders swimming and requires considerable effort. The Pokédex describes a defense based on an immediate choice: gain volume and range to repel an opponent, even at the temporary cost of mobility.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon X puts the water Qwilfish can suddenly swallow before firing its spikes at ten liters. Pokémon Omega Ruby notes that swimming then becomes difficult. Its defensive transformation supplies a ranged weapon but limits freedom of movement.
