Great Tusk sightings have been reported in recent years. Its name was taken from a creature recorded in an older book, giving the word a past without immediately explaining the Pokémon itself. A paranormal magazine claims that a similar being has lived since ancient times. The Pokédex distinguishes recent encounters from this distant hypothesis. Great Tusk therefore stands between what witnesses have seen and what old or speculative accounts suggest might be inferred.

Pokémon Scarlet specifies that the name Great Tusk comes from a creature described in a certain book. Pokémon Violet mentions a resemblance to a Pokémon a paranormal magazine claimed was very ancient: that comparison does not prove how long it has existed.
