CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

Wailord travels in groups across vast marine expanses. To hunt, several individuals may leap from the water, create a huge wave and gather prey before swallowing it. The group also protects young Wailmer when a predator approaches. Its size attracts human observers, but the Pokédex chiefly describes a collective life: seeking food, defending the young and crossing the sea together.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Ultra Moon describes Wailord forming a circle around a young Wailmer attacked by Sharpedo or Dhelmise. Pokémon Sun relates that they swallow schools of Wishiwashi. Their large mouths therefore serve to feed them, while their numbers protect the youngest.
