The Pokémon’s story

Muk seeks places where waste accumulates. It feeds on revolting substances and sometimes gathers in cities with dirty streets. The fluid seeping from its body is toxic enough to damage water and plants. Yet improved cleanliness has also made its food scarcer. The Pokédex says artificial sludge ponds have even been dug to sustain its population. Its existence thus depends on an environment that humans generally try to clean up.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Ultra Sun mentions artificial sludge ponds created to prevent Muk from disappearing through lack of food. This detail reverses its image as a nuisance: a cleaner environment can also deprive this species of the resources it depends on.
