The Pokémon’s story

Deerling's coat changes color and scent with the seasons. Temperature and humidity can also influence this transformation, so its coloring does more than identify the month. In mountain meadows, these variations help it blend among grasses. If it senses hostility, it hides there. Yet residents watch its colors to track the seasons. The same coat therefore serves as both protection and a living calendar.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Black connects Deerling's coat with mountain grasses and describes it fleeing into vegetation when threatened. Pokémon White says humans use its changing appearance to identify seasons; Black 2 adds humidity's influence.
