CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

Sandshrew seeks dry regions and digs a den with claws capable of cutting into rock. Humidity does not suit it: it rolls in sand to dry its skin and may head to a volcano when it gets too wet. At night, however, dew forms on its skin. Faced with danger, it curls into a ball to protect its fragile belly. Its daily life therefore involves managing water, heat and a body built for digging.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Ultra Moon says Sandshrew goes to dry itself near a volcano when its skin absorbs too much moisture. Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu instead describes dew settling on it at night. Its dry habitat therefore does not prevent daily contact with water.
