CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

Zubat sleeps upside down in caves or in the shade of old buildings. Its thin skin tolerates sunlight poorly, so it waits for darkness before taking flight. Without eyes, it emits ultrasonic waves from its mouth to avoid obstacles, even in narrow passages. When cold arrives, individuals huddle together. Its group life and sense of direction thus compensate for two major vulnerabilities: light and temperature.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Moon explains that Zubat’s ultrasonic waves do not have exactly the same frequency from one group to another. These signals help it move in darkness, but can also distinguish colonies. Pokémon Shield describes them huddling closely to sleep in warmth.
