The Pokémon’s story

Chikorita prefers sunshine and peaceful surroundings. Yet when a confrontation begins, it waves its leaf to keep the opponent at a distance. The fragrance it releases can then soothe the fighters themselves. Its defense thus carries an unusual gentleness: a gesture meant to repel the other also makes the encounter less hostile, as though calm were trying to return.

Chikorita's leaf has a sensory function. In Pokémon Silver and SoulSilver, it lets Chikorita assess humidity and temperature. This fragrant organ therefore also serves to read the conditions of its immediate environment.
