CARDEX BACKGROUND
In seafaring accounts, Dragonite appears when someone is in danger of drowning. The Pokédex describes its tendency to rescue humans and Pokémon, and even tells of it guiding a shipwrecked person to an island inhabited by its kind. Its flights over raging seas inspired a nickname given to it by a captain. Behind the dragon's power is a benevolent presence associated with rescue at sea.
Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later. In Pokémon Shield, Dragonite's maritime reputation extends to ships themselves: many carry a figurehead in its likeness. The dragon is therefore present on a voyage even when it is not flying above the waves. This detail reflects the place sailors give it in their imagery.
Quoted source text is retained in the card’s printed language so this exact printing can be identified. The CarDex background above is translated into English.
