CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

Relicanth was discovered in the ocean depths when its species was thought extinct. Its appearance is said to have changed very little over millions of years, earning it the nickname of a living fossil. Hard scales and fat reserves let it withstand water pressure. Teeth poorly suited to hunting lead it to feed on microorganisms. The Pokédex thus describes a survivor of the depths whose supposed longevity rests on an inconspicuous life.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Sword explains Relicanth's resistance to pressure through its tough scales and fatty swim bladders. Pokémon Moon mentions its poor teeth and diet of microorganisms. Its survival in deep water therefore depends on several adaptations, rather than a predator's strength.
