CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

Squirtle’s shell accompanies its every movement. On land, it becomes a refuge into which it can withdraw its limbs when danger approaches. In water, by contrast, its rounded shape and grooves ease movement. What first looks like armour also tells of a swimmer’s life: its protection contributes to its freedom of movement.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Squirtle is not born with an already rigid shell. Pokémon HeartGold states that it is initially soft, then quickly hardens. Its emblematic defence therefore develops early in life rather than being immediately ready.
