The Pokémon’s story

Jangmo-o clatters its scales to communicate with its own kind. It also practices fighting by striking its head scale against a partner's, developing both technique and determination. Facing an enemy, it refuses to turn its back. The Pokédex recounts that warriors of old sought this bravery in a companion. Its scales therefore serve as language and training tools as well as signs of courage.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Shield describes Jangmo-o communicating through the sound of its scales. Pokémon Sword shows it training head to head. Ultra Moon reports that ancient warriors valued its determination never to turn its back on an opponent.
