CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

Shellder closes its sturdy shell to protect the fragile body inside. Opening it makes Shellder vulnerable, but this movement also lets it swim rapidly backward. Sand entering the shell can turn into pearls over time; since they bother it, it spits them out. The Pokédex thus describes essential shelter that is never entirely still: Shellder opens it to escape, feed or remove a cumbersome object.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Ultra Sun explains that Shellder spits out pearls formed from sand inside its shell. Pokémon Sword shows it moving by opening and closing that same shell. What humans find precious may therefore mainly hinder its movements.
