CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

Torkoal searches for coal in mountains and abandoned mines. It places it in cavities in its shell to maintain the fire that gives it energy. In battle, it burns more; when threatened, it spits out black smoke to conceal its escape. If the fire weakens, it loses strength and can no longer move forward. The Pokédex makes its shell a vital store, as important for living as for defending itself.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Ultra Sun gives a clue to Torkoal’s health: abundant smoke coming from its shell indicates that it is doing well. Pokémon Ultra Moon explains that it becomes motionless when all its coal has burned. Its smoke is therefore more than a defensive screen.
