CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

On ancient tablets, Unown's shapes resemble carved symbols. Yet the Pokédex leaves a question unanswered: did these forms inspire language, or did writing exist before them? Each shape deepens the sense of reading a message without knowing how to decipher it. Unown's story lies in this mystery, somewhere between a living creature and a character from a forgotten alphabet.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

A lone Unown seems to cause no unusual phenomenon. According to the Pokémon Black Pokédex, a mysterious power appears when several gather together. This difference between being alone and being in a group adds another puzzle to their letter-like forms. The game describes the phenomenon without explaining exactly how it works.
