The Pokémon’s story

When Burmy evolves into Wormadam, the cloak it assembled becomes a lasting part of its body. The materials around it at the moment of evolution therefore determine its appearance, and it never removes this covering. This connection with the environment explains several forms without making them different species. A tradition adds that an individual evolving in cold weather supposedly wears a thicker cloak, but the Pokédex presents this idea as hearsay.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Pearl connects visible differences between Wormadam with materials available during evolution. Pokémon Diamond specifies that it never removes the incorporated cloak. Pokémon HeartGold reports only as a belief the greater thickness of a cloak formed on a cold day.
