CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

Seel pursues prey beneath the ice of cold seas. To breathe again, it strikes the frozen surface with the hard part of its head and opens a passage. Its thick skin, fur and layer of fat let it swim in almost freezing water. Heat suits it less well, making its presence in tropical regions surprising to the Pokédex. Its body is shaped for waters where breathing sometimes requires breaking through an icy ceiling.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Omega Ruby describes Seel opening a hole in the ice with its head to breathe. Pokémon Ultra Sun notes its unexpected presence in Alola, far from the cold seas once thought essential to it. The species thus seems able to live outside its most favorable environment.
