CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

According to the Pokédex, Sandygast is born when a resentful spirit possesses a mound of sand. It lives on beaches and cares greatly about the shovel planted in its head. Its body grows when it controls people who put a hand into its mouth. This story turns a familiar beach game into a trap: the castle shape looks fragile, but its inhabitant can defend itself fiercely to keep its object and attract a victim.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Ultra Sun says Sandygast fights to keep the shovel on its head, even when a child simply wants it back. Pokémon Shield explains that it enlarges its body by controlling someone caught in its mouth. This detail makes the shovel seem far less innocent.
