The Pokémon’s story

Meltan absorbs iron and other metals from the ground by melting them. Its liquid-metal body circulates this material to produce energy. Meltan live in groups; when evolution is due, the strongest may absorb its companions and become Melmetal. The Pokédex describes an existence in which food, internal movement and changes of form all depend on the surrounding metals.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Sword explains that Meltan draws energy from molten metal circulating inside its body. Pokémon Shield describes the evolution of a dominant individual that absorbs other Meltan. Becoming Melmetal therefore involves an entire group in this account.
