The Pokémon’s story

Pumpkaboo shelters in its pumpkin body a spirit trapped in this world. At dusk, it becomes more active. Pokédex accounts also give it a strange task: gathering wandering souls and helping them reach the afterlife. Beneath its lantern-like appearance, it thus carries a story of passage and rest rather than a simple fondness for darkness. Yet the light emerging from its openings can disturb those who look at it.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Sword describes Pumpkaboo as a transporter of wandering souls to the afterlife. Pokémon Shield gives another effect to the light visible through its body's holes: it may hypnotize people and Pokémon who stare at it.
