CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

Lampent can pass for a streetlamp in a town, remaining motionless until it spots a dying person. It then follows them silently. Pokédex accounts say it draws in souls to sustain its flame, explaining its reputation as a bad omen. Its presence near hospitals has strengthened this fear. Behind the familiar object it imitates thus hides a Pokémon associated with final moments, long before passers-by notice it.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Shield explains that Lampent disguises itself as an urban streetlamp to follow its target discreetly. Pokémon Sword explains its reputation as a messenger of death through its appearances at the moment someone dies. Its camouflage makes this belief still more unsettling.
