CARDEX BACKGROUND

The Pokémon’s story

Hippopotas lives in arid regions with others of its species. It closes its nostrils and moves beneath sand that protects it from the sun and microbes. By day, it can hunt with its mouth open, then expel through its nose the grains swallowed along the way. Cold nights drive it to bury itself more deeply to sleep. The Pokédex presents a desert inhabitant whose breathing, skin and movements are adapted to a changing environment.

Background on the species in the video games; its forms and card versions may have appeared later.

A detail worth noticing

Pokémon Black mentions colonies of around ten Hippopotas. Pokémon Sword describes sand expelled through the nose after hunting with an open mouth. Its unusual way of moving thus brings the material of its habitat into its meal.
