The Pokémon’s story

Zoroark protects its own by distorting what intruders see. It can take on another appearance, but also change the look of an entire landscape to mislead those threatening its territory. The Pokédex describes tightly bonded groups: its illusions therefore serve less to attract attention than to preserve a refuge and its companions. Anyone crossing its forest may believe they are following a safe path while already responding to the Pokémon’s staged scene.

A detail worth noticing

Zoroark’s illusions do not always serve to drive away intruders. Pokémon Shield relates that lonely Trainers sometimes ask it to create an illusion to keep them company. The same faculty that defends its habitat can thus meet a human need, even though the presence it shows remains illusory.
