Atari XEGS will not turn on: power checks

Your Atari XEGS will not turn on? Check the connection to the Power port, the adapter’s visible condition and the light after pressing Power. These checks help clarify the problem before any internal repair.

What you need

Required: Atari XEGS with its suitable adapter and a mains socket. These checks require no tools or console opening. Recommended: a known working socket for comparison.

1. Check the power connector

At the back of the Atari XEGS, locate the port marked Power. Insert the adapter’s round connector, then connect the other end to an earthed mains socket or power strip.

The manual distinguishes this connection from the video connector and SIO port. Check that the plug is in the power port, not another rear-panel connection.

2. Inspect the adapter, cable and plug

Technical XEGS documentation recommends inspecting the adapter cable, the areas near the power brick and connector, and the connector contacts before concluding there is an internal fault.

If the cable, power brick or plug looks damaged, stop connecting it and seek advice from a competent repairer.

3. Observe the [Power] light

The Atari manual says connecting the adapter alone does not turn the console on: if the [Power] key’s light comes on when you connect it, the console is already switched on. Otherwise, press [Power] to turn it on; the light should then illuminate.

If the light stays off after pressing [Power], record that result before any repair. Before pressing the key, an unlit indicator may simply mean the console is off; even after the test, it does not identify the cause on its own.

4. Stop before attempting internal repairs

The Atari manual recommends authorised service for operating problems not resolved by connection and setup checks. It provides no user procedure for opening or repairing the power supply.

If the connector is properly connected, the adapter and cable have been inspected, and the [Power] light remains off after pressing the key, stop testing and have a professional examine the console.

Key points

  • The round connector must be plugged into the Power port at the back of the XEGS.
  • The adapter must connect to an earthed mains socket or power strip.
  • Inspect the cable, strain points and connector contacts before concluding there is an internal fault.
  • The light on the [Power] key should illuminate when the console is switched on; it may stay off when only the adapter has been connected.
  • If there is no result, seek competent service rather than improvising an internal inspection.
