This procedure covers a Nintendo GameCube and a Game Boy Advance connected with a compatible GameCube–Game Boy Advance cable. The link works only with a game designed for this feature; other consoles, variants and accessories are outside this guide’s scope.
What you need
- Compatible GameCube–Game Boy Advance cable
- Game designed to support the GameCube–Game Boy Advance link

Before starting
Check that the game supports a GameCube–Game Boy Advance link. Nintendo recommends looking for the compatibility icon on the game box and reading its manual. Features vary between games: the Game Boy Advance may act as an extra screen or an input device, for example.
Prepare the Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance and the cable designed for this link. Keep both devices switched off while connecting them.
Connect the Game Boy Advance to the GameCube
- Switch off both devices. The GameCube and Game Boy Advance must be off before you connect the cable.
- Connect the GameCube end. Insert it into a controller socket on the front of the console. If the game manual specifies a particular socket, use that one.
- Connect the Game Boy Advance end. Insert it into the expansion connector labelled EXT on top of the Game Boy Advance.
- Start the devices and follow the game’s instructions. The link feature and startup sequence depend on the game. Consult its manual to find out what should appear and what to do next.
The link is working when the game activates its intended Game Boy Advance feature. If nothing happens, first check that the game supports the link and that you have used the controller socket specified in its manual.
Power the Game Boy Advance separately
The GameCube does not power the Game Boy Advance through this cable. The handheld needs its own batteries or a compatible mains adapter.
Disconnect the cable without forcing it
Switch off the GameCube and Game Boy Advance before removing the cable. At the Game Boy Advance end, press the release levers as you remove the plug, then remove the GameCube plug.
If the link does not start
- Check that the game is specifically designed to use a GameCube–Game Boy Advance link.
- Consult the game manual to confirm which GameCube controller socket to use.
- Check that the Game Boy Advance plug is fully inserted into the EXT connector.
- Check the Game Boy Advance’s independent power supply: the cable does not power it from the GameCube.
