Nintendo 3DS after online shutdown: what still works?
The end of online services does not make the whole 3DS unusable. Distinguish local modes, previously purchased content and discontinued services to choose what you can still do with the console.

Before you start
Nintendo 3DS and 2DS family, including New models. Some functions depend on the game and previously obtained content. Identify the exact game or service; for multiplayer, note whether the other players are nearby. This summary records official documentation checked on 15 October 2026, not a guarantee of future availability.
1. Identify the available functions
| Function | Documented situation |
|---|---|
| Offline games and local features | Remain usable where the game provides them. |
| StreetPass | Local communication remains. |
| Online play and SpotPass | General services ended in April 2024. |
| New eShop purchases and demos | Unavailable since March 2023. |
| Redownloads of purchases and updates | Announced as available until further notice; demos cannot be redownloaded. |
| Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter | Exceptions named by Nintendo; later closure remains possible. |
The announcements distinguish purchases ending on 27 March 2023 from general online-play services ending on 8 April 2024. A working Wi-Fi connection therefore does not mean the desired service is available.
2. Choose an offline or local activity
Start with a game you own. Find its single-player or local option, then consult its manual for multiplayer requirements: consoles, game copies or local Download Play. The word “multiplayer” alone does not establish a local mode.
StreetPass communicates between nearby consoles; SpotPass relied on the Internet. Online distribution of new Puzzle Swap panels illustrates why not every StreetPass Mii Plaza function uses the same mechanism.
Expected result: you identify a mode suitable for your situation instead of trying to restore a closed server.
3. Distinguish downloads from new purchases
Nintendo’s notice retains redownloads of purchased software and additional content, plus updates, until further notice. That does not reopen purchases of games, themes or paid content. Demos cannot be redownloaded, even if previously obtained.
Before deleting content, record its name and check which category it belongs to. Having used something before does not establish that you can recover it. Keep a record of the account or identifier associated with your purchases.
4. Recheck exceptions when you need them
Nintendo names Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter as exceptions to the general shutdown while warning that they may end later. This does not guarantee future availability or installation for a new user.
Before an important transfer, check Nintendo’s announcement and the software’s own instructions. Do not rely solely on an old icon or undated tutorial.
If a connection still fails
First record the exact function that fails. Reconfiguring a router will not restore a discontinued service. For a service announced as available, keep the error message before investigating the connection or publisher’s guidance.
For other publishers’ games, Nintendo directs users to the relevant publisher for service details.
Make a short list of activities you want to keep using. Mark each “local”, “offline”, “download still offered” or “service closed”. This helps you enjoy the console according to its documented capabilities.
