Nintendo 3DS: calibrate an inaccurate touchscreen
Does your 3DS select beside the point touched? Calibrate the lower screen to check its accuracy. You can open the tool with buttons if inaccurate touch input prevents you from reaching settings.

Before you start
Nintendo 3DS and its lower touchscreen. Circle Pad and stereoscopic 3D adjustments are separate operations. Have enough battery charge, a suitable stylus and a stable place to hold the console without touching the screen accidentally. Allow a few minutes; no disassembly is involved.
Before you begin
Save your game and exit the software. Identify whether input registers beside the stylus or one area never responds. Keep this observation for comparison. Calibration does not replace damaged hardware.
1. Open touchscreen calibration
Nintendo provides two ways to reach the same tool:
- If menus are usable: from HOME, open System Settings → Other Settings → Touch Screen.
- If you cannot reach settings: power off. Hold L + R + X while turning the console on to open calibration directly.
Use whichever route works. Once targets appear, continue there; this is not an Internet setting or a menu inside your game.
2. Touch the targets accurately
Use the stylus tip to touch the centre of each target. Nintendo describes the sequence as top left, bottom right and centre. Wait for each target to move before touching the next. Avoid imprecise finger presses.
Take your time if you miss a target. The aim is accuracy, not speed. Nintendo’s touchscreen instructions indicate that a return to the top-left target means calibration needs repeating.
3. Check and save the result
After successful calibration, the tool displays a confirmation and points in the four corners. Touch each one to check accuracy. Select OK to save, or retry if input remains inaccurate.
Expected result: input matches the stylus position in all four corners. After leaving the tool, repeat the action that was difficult before.
The menu closing does not by itself establish success. Compare the same selection again. If it remains offset, note where and on which screen this occurs.
If the offset remains
Nintendo’s touchscreen diagnosis recommends checking screen protectors and buttons that may be held down. A protector can affect response. If removing it for comparison, follow its removal instructions and do not use a sharp tool on the screen.
Try drawing in Game Notes. If drawing is accurate but one game behaves badly, consult that game’s settings and manual. If the issue occurs everywhere, calibration has not resolved it.
- Calibration keeps restarting: check stylus accuracy and whether a protector interferes.
- One area remains inactive: record the area rather than repeating indefinitely.
- The fault persists: have the console assessed. Repair availability depends on model and country; this guide does not promise Nintendo service.
When requesting help, provide the exact model, protector details, affected areas and calibration result. These checks require no disassembly.
