Nintendo Switch 2: move a game to microSD Express
Is your Switch 2 running out of internal space while its microSD Express card has room? Move a game’s software data from System Settings, or move it back into system memory when needed. Saved progress is managed separately: this transfer is not a save-data backup.

Before you start
Nintendo Switch 2 with an installed game and a microSD Express card already recognised by the console. The destination needs enough free space. Connect power if battery charge is low. No computer is required for the move.
1. Check the storage type and the data being moved
Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ distinguishes software data from save data. Software files can occupy the card, while saves remain in system memory. An ordinary microSD card from the original Switch is not a substitute for microSD Express when installing Switch 2 games.
First choose your goal: free internal memory or bring a game back from the card. Note the exact title and free space on both storage devices before starting. This lets you verify the result instead of relying only on its HOME Menu icon.
2. Move the game from System Settings
- From HOME, open System Settings → Data Management.
- Enter the option for moving data between system memory and the microSD card.
- Choose the direction: to the Express card or back into system memory. Select the intended game or games.
- Review the selection and confirm using the on-screen button. Wait for completion before removing the card or turning off the console.
3. Check the result
Expected result: the move finishes, free space increases on the source and decreases at the destination. Launch the game with your usual user and check that your progress is present.
Not every file necessarily follows the game. Some update data cannot be moved, and later updates may occupy another location. This menu does not permanently determine where every future file will be stored.
If you are changing consoles, use the separate nearby-console save-transfer procedure. Compatible Nintendo Switch Online cloud backups are also a different operation. Neither is replaced by moving installed software between internal memory and a card.
If the move does not work
- The card is missing: first confirm that it is an Express card and is recognised by the console. Do not format important data simply to test this move.
- The game cannot be selected: close it and finish ongoing downloads, then return to the menu. Use the actual message to distinguish an active operation from insufficient space.
- Not enough space: reduce the selection and start with one game. Do not delete save data to make room for software files.
- An error persists: record its code, game and transfer direction, then consult Nintendo support before any destructive action.
A small test is easier to interpret: move one game, check it, then handle the rest. This is LODEX’s organisational advice, not a Nintendo requirement.
