PS4: what to check when a game or Blu-ray disc cannot be read

Is your PS4 no longer recognising a game or Blu-ray disc? Check the disc, compare it with another one and, if necessary, rebuild the database. These checks do not require opening the console and stop before any reset. They help you decide what to do next without claiming that a particular component has failed.

What you need

  • The affected disc and another PS4 game, Blu-ray or DVD that you know works.
  • A soft cloth; a DualShock 4 controller and its USB cable.
  • A USB drive already formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, with at least twice the space required for the planned backup file, as described in the official full-backup instructions.

1. Check the disc type

Rule out audio CDs and burned discs: the PS4 cannot play them. Start with a PS4 game or an appropriate Blu-ray/DVD. This limitation is listed in the PlayStation troubleshooting guide.

Write down the exact message and the disc’s name. Note whether one disc or several are affected. A stuck disc or a disc that ejects itself is a different symptom: use the relevant section of that guide instead of forcing the mechanism.

2. Clean and compare

  1. Eject the disc and inspect its surface. Set aside any cracked or warped disc.
  2. Wipe with a soft cloth from the centre towards the edge, then reinsert the disc.
  3. Try another PS4 game, Blu-ray or DVD that you know works.

Cleaning the disc and testing another one are the first checks recommended by PlayStation.

What the results mean: if only the first disc fails, investigate that disc first. If several discs fail, continue checking the console. This helps narrow down the problem; it does not prove that the lens has failed.

3. Prepare a backup

Before using Safe Mode, prepare a full backup on a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive with at least twice the space required for the expected backup file. Go to Settings → System → Back Up and Restore → Back Up and confirm the data you want to keep, including your game saves. Follow the official PS4 backup guide; do not turn off the console during the backup. Formatting a drive erases its contents: choose a suitable drive that is already prepared. You do not need to restore anything for this procedure. If you cannot back up your data, stop and ask for support.

This guide stops before: any reset or reinstallation. Options 6 and 7 delete user data; option 7 also removes the system software. Do not select them instead of option 5.

4. Rebuild the database

  1. Turn the PS4 off completely and wait for its power indicator to go out.
  2. Press and hold the power button again until the second beep, around seven seconds after the first.
  3. Connect the DualShock 4 using the USB cable, then press the PS button.
  4. Select only 5 — Rebuild Database.
  5. Let the process finish before testing again.

The startup procedure and option name come from the Safe Mode guide. The disc-reading troubleshooting guide recommends this option after the initial checks. The time required depends on the console’s contents: allow enough time, without assuming a guaranteed duration.

5. Check the result and stop

Test the affected disc again, followed by the second disc. Keep their names and the result of each test so you can explain the problem to support. Normal playback with both discs is the intended result; it is not a test of every function of the drive.

If the problem persists, use the Repairs diagnostic service linked from the PlayStation guide. That page also mentions a reinstallation that erases everything: it requires separate preparation and is not covered here. Do not open the console for these checks.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing PS4 instructions with the option numbers in PS5 Safe Mode.
  • Assuming the drive has failed after testing only one unreadable disc.
  • Treating a database rebuild as a guaranteed hardware repair.
  • Selecting a reset because its name looks similar.
