PS5: format a USB drive as extended storage
Before using an external USB drive for games, check its requirements and select the correct formatting operation. Prepare the intended drive without confusing extended storage with a backup of your console.

Before you start
PS5 with a 250 GB to 8 TB drive using SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster. Sony does not guarantee every device. You need the suitable cable and a separate copy of files you want to keep. Connect directly to the console, without a USB hub.
1. Identify the drive before erasing its contents
Formatting erases the selected drive. Copy important files elsewhere before starting.
Identify the drive by its model and capacity, then inspect the copied files before attaching it to the console. If others use the drive, check whether their files also need preserving.
A drive already formatted as extended storage on PS4 or another PS5 can be connected without formatting again. Do not erase it merely because you are changing consoles.
2. Choose a suitable USB port
PlayStation’s port guide requires a SuperSpeed connection for extended storage. The two rear USB-A ports provide this on CFI-1000, CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 models. A SuperSpeed USB-C port is also available at the front, but not every front port has the same speed.
Identify the console model if unsure. A USB-C connector shape alone does not establish its speed. Use the appropriate cable and place the drive securely rather than leaving it hanging from the cable behind furniture.
3. Format through PS5 settings
- Open Settings → Storage → USB Extended Storage.
- Check the displayed drive, then select Format as USB Extended Storage.
- Read the confirmation before proceeding. Wait until it finishes without turning off the console or disconnecting the drive.
PlayStation provides a way to select another drive when several are connected. Carefully check the target: formatting again cannot undo selecting the wrong device.
4. Check recognition and plan how to use it
Expected result: the drive is recognised as extended storage in Settings. You can then organise game installations on it.
PS4 games can run from this drive. PS5 games can be stored there but need to return to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before playing. PlayStation’s storage guidance also distinguishes installation data, saved progress and captures.
Begin with a simple purpose, such as keeping games you play less frequently. This gives you a clear record of what is on the drive without moving the whole library at once.
If the drive is not offered
Recheck capacity, direct connection, cable and the selected SuperSpeed port. A powered-on drive is not necessarily connected over a link suitable for extended storage.
Record the exact error and drive model before looking for a solution. Repeated random formatting does not establish that an unsuitable cable or device has become compatible.
To disconnect the drive while the console is on, use the safe-removal option in USB Extended Storage settings.
