Why the R36S makes us want to play again

Sometimes recalling a soundtrack, a level or a childhood gaming session is enough to make you want to pick up a console again. The R36S speaks to that wish. It brings your game selection together in a device devoted to playing, with a directional pad, buttons and two sticks within reach.

We find this approach particularly appealing for short breaks: pick a game you enjoy, resume a session and settle back into familiar controls. You do not need an expensive machine for that pleasure. A worthwhile purchase is one you will want to pick up regularly, even for a short session.

That is what we like about the R36S: it makes this idea affordable. It could be your first retro handheld, a device dedicated to your favourites or an extra little console you enjoy taking out of a drawer. Build a game library that reflects your tastes.

A charming format with physical controls

With its screen above the controls, the R36S follows the shape of vertical handheld consoles. The listing’s images include a white finish and a translucent blue shell. The first is understated; the second reveals part of the interior and leans into the retro feel.

The classic R36S uses a 3.5-inch IPS screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio, a Rockchip RK3326 processor and 1 GB of RAM. For this purchase, we are especially interested in the combination of a small dedicated screen and physical controls. You are choosing an object built around gaming, with a different feel from a phone.

Why we selected this AliExpress offer

LODEX selected this offer for its reliability. We recommend it to anyone seeking an R36S and wanting a clear starting point. This article links to the specific Classic Game Store listing, with the colours and capacities offered by that seller.

The price observed on 20 October 2026 was €35.99 for France. At that level, we find the R36S interesting for discovering retro gaming on a dedicated handheld without a large outlay. Your final price depends on the selected version and delivery destination: check the total in your basket. This euro snapshot is not a worldwide delivered price.

Where could it fit into your everyday life?

What you want	Our take	LODEX’s advice
Revisiting favourite games	Our main reason to recommend it.	Prepare a personal selection you will want to return to.
Discovering retro gaming on a budget	An accessible entry into the hobby.	Keep the budget simple: the console and genuinely useful accessories.
Treating yourself to a dedicated handheld	A small purchase for enjoyment that makes sense.	Choose a colour you like and storage suited to your selection.
A gift for a retro gaming fan	An appealing idea with some preparation.	Check and prepare the console before giving it: that makes the first experience more enjoyable.

LODEX’s advice for enjoying your purchase

We recommend backing up the supplied card and preparing a microSD from a reliable source. This lets you build the setup around your console and game selection. If you already own a compatible reader, there is no need to buy another.

Also identify the hardware version before changing the system: several screen panels and motherboards exist. This helps you choose the correct files while leaving our recommendation of this offer unchanged. The listing does not guarantee panel 4, so our opinion does not rely on a promise of receiving that particular panel.

Finally, extra capacity is useful only if you need it. For us, a thoughtful selection beats a catalogue you get lost in. Start with the games you actually want to play, then develop your setup from there.

Our verdict: a little handheld worth shortlisting

LODEX recommends the R36S as an affordable way to enjoy retro gaming. We like its positioning: a dedicated retro handheld, an appealing format and an accessible budget. The selected offer provides a concrete starting point for buying this model.

If you want to revisit favourite games on a small handheld, this is an option we recommend considering. Pick your colour, check the variant price and prepare your selection: the aim is to enjoy your hobby without an oversized budget.

LODEX’s quick answers

Does LODEX recommend this offer?

Yes. This Classic Game Store listing is among the R36S offers LODEX selects for reliability. Every purchase button in the article leads to that same offer.

Should you choose the 256 GB version?

Choose capacity according to your selection and the price difference. A larger card provides more storage; it does not make the console more powerful.

Is it a good gift?

Yes, for someone who enjoys retro gaming. We recommend preparing and checking the console before giving it so that the first experience can focus on playing.
