R36S microSD cards: SanDisk Ultra, Extreme or Samsung EVO Plus?

A more expensive microSD card does not automatically make games run better on an R36S. SanDisk Ultra, Extreme or Samsung EVO Plus: useful capacity, a compatible model and price matter first. Here are the differences worth considering before you order.

The speeds printed on packaging are easy to notice. They do not answer the first question, though: is this card suitable for your console and the files you want to store? Separate two uses when choosing: the system card and the second card for games. Compatibility of the exact model comes first, especially in the TF2 slot.

The quick choice

For a system card, start with the capacity you need and a model compatible with your console before paying for a maximum speed rating. An Ultra A1 may be enough for straightforward use; an Extreme or EVO Plus A2 becomes more interesting if you also use the card in another demanding device. None of these markings promises a higher frame rate in games.

For the second TF2 card, first check reports for your R36S variant and the exact card model. This comparison does not guarantee that an entire product range will work in every TF2 reader.

What we are actually comparing

This comparison covers three common families: SanDisk Ultra UHS-I, SanDisk Extreme UHS-I and Samsung EVO Plus. To avoid comparing an older 64 GB card with a newer 512 GB card, start with the same capacity, such as 128 GB, then check the complete manufacturer model number. The Samsung data sheet used here covers the 2024 generation; other generations need to be checked separately.

RangeWhen to consider itPublished specification worth consideringLimitation for an R36S
SanDisk Ultra UHS-I A1A straightforward card, if compatible and cheaper at the same capacityGeneral-purpose positioning and A1 application performance classDo not compare speeds from different generations using the Ultra name alone
SanDisk Extreme UHS-I A2 / U3 / V30Mixed use with a device that can benefit from these classesClasses aimed at application access and sustained writingThe R36S does not automatically benefit from every advantage
Samsung EVO Plus 2024, 128 GB and aboveAn alternative to compare with Extreme on delivered priceA2 / U3 / V30 for the relevant capacities in the 2024 data sheetThe EVO Plus name alone confirms neither the generation nor TF2 compatibility

Range information comes from the SanDisk Ultra, SanDisk Extreme and Samsung EVO Plus 2024 specifications. These are advertised specifications, not results measured on an R36S.

SanDisk Ultra: focus on what you need

SanDisk Ultra

Ultra is a reasonable candidate if you mainly want to replace a system card and the selected model is documented as compatible. Its attraction is then financial: spending on a suitable card and a backup rather than a speed figure your use may not benefit from.

Its advantage: an option to compare for straightforward use. Its limitation: the Ultra name covers several generations and capacities. Do not choose solely by the card colour or the seller’s first image. If Extreme costs the same delivered and both models suit your needs, Ultra loses its price advantage.

SanDisk Extreme: useful beyond the console

Extreme deserves consideration if you also plan to use the card with a camera, another computer or a device that can benefit from its performance classes. For an R36S alone, any extra cost should meet an identified need: a higher rating is not, by itself, a reason to replace a working card.

Its advantage: a card to consider for several uses. Its limitation: the extra cost may make no difference to your gaming experience. Compare the same capacity, delivered price and return terms; do not pay more solely for the promise of a “faster” console.

Samsung EVO Plus: compare the right generation

Samsung EVO Plus

EVO Plus is an alternative to consider at the same capacity. Check the model and generation stated in the offer: a generic image or the word “Samsung” in a listing title is not enough. A card described simply as “for Samsung” is not necessarily made by Samsung.

Its advantage: another option to weigh up by price, seller and your other devices. Its limitation: a manufacturer specification does not validate every R36S variant. For TF2, look for the precise card, console and firmware combination before deciding.

A1, A2, U3 and V30: what they mean and what they do not tell you

A classes describe access performance relevant to applications. The SD Association states that A2 performance requires a compatible A2 card and host combination. Speed classes cover different read and write conditions; they do not measure emulator performance. The application performance and speed-class documentation is listed in our methodology.

On the preparation computer, the card, reader and USB port form a chain: changing only the card does not remove every other bottleneck. On the console, the correct system image, hardware variant and settings are separate matters. A new card does not fix the wrong DTB file or unsuitable firmware.

Our verdict for your situation

  • You are only replacing the system card: compare compatible models first, then choose the capacity you need at the best delivered price from an identifiable seller.
  • You also use the card elsewhere: Extreme or EVO Plus may make sense if that other device benefits from their specifications.
  • You are buying for TF2: put compatibility with your variant ahead of the product-range ranking.
  • Your current card works: start by backing it up. A purchase is not required to follow every guide.

Five checks before ordering

  • Read the brand, model number, capacity and generation actually selected.
  • Check the delivered price for that variant and your country, not the lowest price anywhere in the listing.
  • Check the seller’s identity, feedback on the exact product and return terms.
  • Keep the original card and a copy of essential files before writing anything.
  • When the card arrives, verify its real capacity with a suitable tool on a card containing no data you need to keep, before entrusting your saves to it.

The offer cards show indicative prices returned by AliExpress. One listing may cover several capacities or generations: the displayed price is not assigned to a 128 GB card unless that variant is selected at the merchant.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need 128 GB?

Not necessarily. Choose capacity based on the system image and your own files. For games on TF2, leave reasonable headroom without confusing a large capacity with guaranteed compatibility.

Will a faster card eliminate slowdowns?

Not necessarily. Slowdowns may come from emulation, settings or an unsuitable system. This comparison cannot diagnose those causes.

Can I copy the old card directly?

Copying visible files does not always replace a system image and its partitions. Follow the guide to preparing a new microSD card and keep the original intact.
