Steam wants your achievements to last
A game can grow without taking away the satisfaction of finishing it. Steam’s Achievement Sets beta addresses that frustration, but it is not a blanket promise that every completion percentage will stay unchanged.

A beta for clearer goals
Valve introduced the Steam Achievement Sets beta on October 15, 2026. Developers can organise achievements into groups with their own progress. It is available through the Steam Client beta in supported games. Valve’s announcement explains the rollout.
The underlying frustration is easy to recognise: returning to a finished game and feeling as though your work has suddenly become unfinished. Clearer grouping can separate the challenge you chose from content added later. It cannot change the hours you already spent enjoying the game.
What remains completed
The Steamworks documentation says a completed set stays completed when more achievements are added. DLC sets count towards completion for owners of that content. Archived achievements remain visible to players who earned them and do not block completion for those who missed them.
Imagine a fictional adventure game whose main set you have finished. An expansion receives a separate set. You can choose whether to explore it without treating your original goal as an unpaid debt. This is an illustrative example, not a description of a particular game’s configuration.
Our view: recognition should not become homework
Recognising a completed milestone is welcome for people who enjoy setting their own challenges. Seasonal objectives can also create pressure to log in before something disappears. The system cannot decide how much of your evening a badge deserves.
A useful question remains: do you want to play, or do you only want to clear a list? A trophy should record an enjoyable experience or a challenge you chose. It should not make a break feel like a mistake. That distinction matters more than maintaining a flawless counter.
This remains a beta, and developers determine how their games use it. We are not promising unchanged percentages across every title. Information was checked on October 20, 2026; this article does not claim a hands-on test of the beta.
