What you need

Your Steam Deck is enough to try the process. A keyboard and mouse can make desktop work more comfortable, but you do not need them to change modes.

1. Get ready to switch modes

Save your game and finish the task you are working on. For a first attempt, we recommend choosing a moment when you do not have an important download or other task to monitor. You can then focus on learning the route into Desktop Mode and back again.

Decide what you want to do on the desktop: open a browser, view a file or use a desktop application. If you only want to launch a game already in your library, Gaming Mode may be all you need. You do not have to turn every gaming session into a configuration project.

2. Switch from Gaming Mode to Desktop Mode

  1. Press the STEAM button.
  2. Choose Power.
  3. Select Switch to Desktop.
  4. Wait for the desktop to appear before opening an application.

This is the route documented in Valve’s Desktop FAQ. It opens the SteamOS desktop environment. You do not need a terminal command to switch modes.

3. Find your way around without extra accessories

Valve explains that the trackpads can act as mouse controls. Pressing the right trackpad gives a primary click; the left trackpad provides a secondary click. With Steam running, STEAM + X opens the on-screen keyboard.

Find the pointer first, then try a simple action. Give a window time to open before clicking again: repeated presses can make the first attempt harder to follow.

A keyboard and mouse may be more comfortable for longer text entry or precise work. They are optional accessories, not a requirement for switching between the two interfaces.

4. Return to Gaming Mode

  1. Save any documents you opened on the desktop.
  2. Activate the Return to Gaming Mode shortcut on the desktop.
  3. Wait for the gaming interface to return.

Valve also describes logging out of the desktop session through the system menus as a way to return to Gaming Mode.

Expected result: the familiar Steam Deck gaming interface returns and you can reach your library. You have completed the first attempt when you know the route in both directions.

If you cannot find the way back

  • The keyboard does not open: check that Steam is running before trying STEAM + X again.
  • The return shortcut is hidden: move or minimise open windows to reveal the desktop, or use the desktop logout option described by Valve.
  • A menu label differs: look for the equivalent mode-switching option. Do not choose a reset or recovery operation to compensate for an unfamiliar name.

If the desktop never opens, record exactly what appears and where the switch stops. This guide covers moving between interfaces; a startup fault needs a separate diagnosis.

Once you have completed the round trip, keep a short note of the route. Next time you can go straight to your task and return to your game without repeating the research.
