Xbox Series X|S: install a storage expansion card
A compatible storage expansion card adds space from which you can run games optimised for Xbox Series X|S. On a new console, finish the initial setup and system update before inserting the card. Then check that the console recognises it and choose where to install or move your games.

At a glance
- Check the supported console and storage type
- Read the prerequisites before changing data
- Allow the operation to finish
- Check the result on the destination device
Compatible systems
Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, using a compatible licensed storage expansion card. This accessory is not a standard PC SSD, USB drive or microSD card. The procedure does not apply to Xbox One.
1. Check the exact expansion card
Check the product name and its stated compatibility with Xbox Series X|S. It must use the console’s dedicated storage expansion format. Do not buy a generic SSD solely because its capacity matches what you need.
A USB drive can store many game installations, but games optimised for Series X|S generally need to run from internal storage or a compatible expansion card. A fast USB SSD does not become an expansion card because of its advertised speed.
2. Complete setup and insert the card
If you have just unpacked the Xbox, complete its initial setup and install the requested system update first. Wait until the console is ready for normal use.
Remove the expansion card’s protective cap and insert it into the Storage Expansion port at the back of the console, in the correct orientation. Seat it securely without forcing it. Do not try to fit it into a USB or HDMI port.
Keep the cap somewhere safe if you expect to move the card between consoles. Before moving storage, let any installation, copy or transfer in progress finish.
3. Choose how you will use the card
When Xbox asks whether you will use the card mainly with this console or with several consoles, choose the option that matches your use.
The option for use mainly on this console allows automatic updates for the games stored on the card. Choosing use with multiple consoles disables automatic updates for those games and apps; you can still update them manually through My games & apps.
This choice concerns how the storage is used and maintained. It does not transfer ownership of games or provide another account with their licences.
4. Confirm the extra storage is available
Open the guide and go to My games & apps → See all to inspect your games. To check the storage devices themselves, open Profile & system → Settings → System → Storage devices.
Compare the internal drive and expansion card capacities. Check that the card appears as a separate usable storage device. Inserting it does not automatically mean that a particular game is now installed on it.
If you are making room for one large game, compare its required space with the free space on the destination before starting a transfer.
5. Move a game or choose installation locations
In My games & apps → See all → Games, highlight a game and press the Menu button. Choose Manage game and add-ons, select the game box and open Move or copy.
Select the expansion card as the destination and choose the items to transfer. Copy retains the original installation; Move transfers it. Start with one game and wait until the operation finishes before comparing both drives.
To change where future content goes, return to Settings → System → Storage devices → Change installation locations. Choose the appropriate destination for the content types shown, or let Xbox choose where to install.
Afterwards, check the game’s location and launch it with the account or disc that provides its licence. A successful copy alone does not prove you can play it.
If the card or a game is not available
If Xbox does not recognise the card, note the exact accessory model and any message before consulting the relevant Xbox support procedure. Do not format the only copy of important data as an experiment.
If the game appears but will not launch, distinguish storage recognition from licence access. Moving the card does not transfer a game licence. Disc-based access still requires a compatible disc drive, so a disc cannot provide that access on Xbox Series S.
Keep a short record of the card model, its detected capacity, the transfer result and the launch message. These observations help identify whether the problem concerns storage, installation or ownership.
