PlayStation / PS1: identify the SCPH model before a repair

Before a repair or parts purchase, record the full reference on the console. The SCPH reference helps you find documentation for a specific series, but internal checks may still be needed when the repair depends on a motherboard or particular assembly.

This guide covers externally reading the SCPH reference on PlayStation / PS1. The PS one SCPH-102 manual example documents that model’s label location; do not generalise the location to other revisions without checking.

What you need

Required items are listed below; optional diagnostic or backup equipment is marked as recommended.

  • No external equipment is required. A camera can preserve a copy of the label but is not needed for identification.

1. Read the SCPH reference without opening the console

To identify your PlayStation before a repair, first look for the full reference beginning SCPH-. Record all visible numbers and letters, not just “PS1” or “PS one”.

The PS one SCPH-102 manual places this reference on the rating plate underneath. Turn the console over and record the label text. This is directly documented for SCPH-102; check other revisions against their own documentation.

Expected result: you should have a full reference, such as “SCPH-102” or “SCPH-5501”, not a general description such as “grey PlayStation”.

2. Keep the full reference when selecting documentation

The SCPH reference is the starting point for finding the right manual or repair documentation. Separate documents exist for references such as SCPH-5501, including adjustments, boards and parts sections. Record the reference before choosing a document.

Do not replace the full reference with the PlayStation family name alone. Two consoles in the same family can require different information for a particular repair.

3. Do not infer the motherboard solely from the SCPH number

The SCPH reference initially indicates the console version, but does not always identify the motherboard with certainty. PsNee documentation associates motherboard versions with console references and says an internal check may be needed when a repair depends on the installed board.

This matters for hardware modifications and parts whose compatibility depends on internal revision. If the documentation or part listing requires board identification, do not conclude from the sticker alone: use the verification procedure for the intended work.

Remember: an SCPH reference is a useful starting identifier, not a universal guarantee of motherboard, BIOS or parts compatibility.

4. For the optical drive, also check the installed assembly

For optical-drive repairs, the SCPH reference may need to be supplemented by identification of the actual installed assembly. The iFixit PlayStation SCPH-5501 motor-speed adjustment guide distinguishes plastic and metal laser assemblies with different treatment.

That distinction does not establish that a laser or adjustment works with every SCPH reference. Before ordering, record the console reference, then check that the documentation or part specifies the relevant model and assembly.

5. Check scope before selecting a part

Use your recorded reference to find a manual, procedure or part explicitly matching your model. If a source says only “PS1” without the required series or revision, compatibility remains unverified.

  • Record the full SCPH reference.
  • Keep a legible photo of the rating plate.
  • Find documentation matching that reference.
  • Check whether the work requires additional internal identification.
  • For an internal part, also check the assembly actually installed.

6. Final check before repair or purchase

Proceed when the full reference is legible and your chosen documentation covers that model. If the repair depends on a motherboard, drive or other internal part, stop before buying until that additional identification is established.

The method: record the SCPH reference, select matching documentation, then verify the internal revision or assembly when the work requires it.
