PS2 power supplies: identify the SCPH model before choosing an adapter
Before connecting a used power supply or buying one, record the SCPH reference on your PlayStation 2. The models documented here do not all use the same power arrangement: the verified SCPH-70000 models use DC IN 8.5V with an external adapter, whereas the verified SCPH-90004 has AC IN for a direct mains lead. A plug that fits does not establish compatibility.

Verified scope: PlayStation 2, distinguishing documented SCPH-70000 series models from SCPH-90004. No generalisation is made about SCPH-75000, SCPH-77000, SCPH-79000, Fat models or other regional variants without individual verification.
What you need
Required items are listed below; optional diagnostic or backup equipment is marked as recommended.
- No external equipment is needed for identification; the PlayStation 2 itself is sufficient. Do not buy an adapter or lead before recording the SCPH reference and checking the socket type.

Before starting: do not connect an unknown power supply
If your PlayStation 2 came with a lead or power brick of unknown origin, leave it aside. A plug physically fitting does not prove that voltage, current, polarity and power arrangement suit the console.
Always start with the full reference on the console label. Do not rely only on “Fat” or “Slim”.
1. Record the exact SCPH reference
Turn over or examine the console and find the manufacturer’s label. Record the reference beginning SCPH-, including every digit and any regional suffix. Keep this reference available before looking for a replacement supply.
Do not replace this check with a generic search such as “PS2 Slim charger”. The available documents do not establish compatibility across all variants from appearance or the word “Slim”.
2. Distinguish DC IN from AC IN
Next, inspect the back of the console and identify the power-connector marking. The key distinction is:
- Verified SCPH-70000-type models: the console has a DC IN 8.5V input and uses an external AC adapter.
- Verified SCPH-90004: the manual shows an ~AC IN socket on the console; the mains lead connects directly to it.
An external adapter for DC IN and a mains lead for AC IN are not interchangeable. If the observed marking does not match the model documentation, stop and recheck the SCPH reference.
3. Documented case: SCPH-70000 with an external adapter
For the SCPH-70000 series covered by Sony’s documents, power enters through DC IN 8.5V. The external adapter’s low-voltage plug connects to the console, and the adapter itself takes a mains lead.
The European SCPH-70004 manual specifies an adapter rated 8.5 V / 5.65 A. Do not turn this documented value into a universal recommendation for all variants: before replacement, check the exact reference, region, electrical specifications and connector for the model concerned.
- Record the full SCPH reference.
- Confirm that the rear is marked DC IN 8.5V.
- Compare the electrical specifications for your model with those on the adapter.
- Do not choose a power brick solely because its plug appears suitable.
4. Documented case: SCPH-90004 with a mains lead
The SCPH-90004 manual identifies an ~AC IN socket at the back. In this documented case, the mains lead connects directly to the console and then to the electrical socket.
Do not treat this setup as a DC IN SCPH-70000. Do not connect an SCPH-70000-type external adapter to a console whose manual specifies AC IN, and do not infer lead compatibility for another regional variant without checking separately.
5. Check the power supply before buying
Before ordering, match the product listing or hardware information to the console:
- Reference: the SCPH model or series must be explicitly stated or verifiable.
- Power arrangement: a direct mains lead for AC IN, or an external adapter for DC IN.
- Connector: the plug must match the console’s actual port.
- Electrical specifications: check the voltage, current and polarity required for an external adapter against the specific model.
If any point remains unknown, compatibility is not established. Do not buy a product described only as “universal” or “for PS2 Slim” without a verifiable technical reference.
6. Also check old adapters covered by Sony’s notice
Sony published a safety notice about certain AC adapters supplied with SCPH-70000 CB consoles manufactured between August and December 2004. The notice mentions overheating, damage and burn risks.
If using a second-hand adapter associated with an SCPH-70000 CB, check its label and manufacturing period against Sony’s notice before powering it. This information does not identify every compatible adapter or every affected unit outside the stated scope.
7. First connection: stop at any abnormal sign
Once you have verified the model and supply type, connect the equipment according to the relevant manual. Stay nearby during the first connection.
- Disconnect immediately if you notice a burning smell, crackling or abnormal heat.
- Do not insist if the connector does not fit naturally.
- Do not continue testing with an adapter whose electrical specifications are unverified.
- If the SCPH reference or socket type remains uncertain, seek a technical check before reconnecting.
Key points
For the models documented here, the distinction is simple: a verified SCPH-70000 connects to an external adapter through DC IN 8.5V, whereas the verified SCPH-90004 takes a mains lead directly at ~AC IN. Always identify the SCPH number before choosing a supply, and never infer compatibility solely from plug shape.
