PS5 temperature warning or shutdown during a game: what should you check?

Does your PS5 show a temperature warning or shut down during a game? Start by letting it cool, clearing its vents and distinguishing a thermal warning from another power problem. These external checks come before repair and require neither internal disassembly nor a reset.

Disc-drive PS5 or Digital Edition: placement, ventilation checks and official diagnosis apply to the PS5 family. Opening procedures depend on the CFI model and are not detailed here.

What you need

  • The power cord specified for the console and country of use.
  • A stable, well-ventilated location.
  • A low-powered vacuum cleaner for accessible external dust.

Recommended equipment

  • A soft, dry cloth for exterior surfaces.
  • The full CFI model number and corresponding manual for any work involving covers.
  • An Internet connection for updating, only if the console remains stable.

First: normal warmth or a warning?

A louder fan during some games can be normal. A console feeling warm is not enough to diagnose overheating. However, if a high-temperature message appears, turn off the console and let it cool before checking anything.

Stop testing if the warning returns, the console shuts down again or a cable is damaged. Do not open the power supply or try to reproduce the fault with a demanding game.

1. Clear the ventilation

  1. Place the PS5 on a stable surface with the support intended for your model.
  2. Leave at least 10 cm of free space on each side and from the wall. Clear the side and rear vents.
  3. Move it out of a narrow or enclosed cabinet. Avoid rugs, carpet, fabrics and heat sources.
  4. Remove objects blocking the vents. Do not place another device on the console.

The aim is to restore airflow, without adding a fan or accessory presented as a repair.

2. Remove accessible dust

Completely turn off the PS5, wait until its indicator goes out, then unplug the power cord and let the console cool. PlayStation recommends a low-powered vacuum cleaner for dust on or around the vents.

Keep this to external maintenance. Do not apply liquids or solvents or push dust inside with a powerful air blast. If internal dirt requires disassembly, use someone with suitable equipment. Covers and supports differ by CFI model: a procedure for one model is not a procedure for the others.

3. If an M.2 SSD was added

An M.2 SSD needs an effective heat-dissipation system, correctly attached according to its instructions. If incidents began after installation, reread PlayStation’s procedure for your model. A correctly installed heatsink does not prove that the SSD caused the shutdown.

If only games installed on that SSD have problems and the console remains stable, PlayStation advises moving the game to internal storage. Never turn on the console with its cover removed.

4. Check power connections without opening the console

With the console off, indicator out and power cord unplugged, examine the cable and accessible connections. Do not use a damaged cable or connect a replacement simply because its plug fits. Follow the cord specifications for your model and country.

A shutdown without a temperature warning does not establish overheating. The PlayStation Repairs diagnostic distinguishes, among other symptoms, a console that will not turn on, freezes or shuts down during a game.

5. Update only if the console is stable

After cooling and correcting ventilation, if the console runs stably, open Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings → Update System Software.

Do not interrupt an update. If the console is still at risk of shutting down, stop local troubleshooting and contact support. Reinstalling system software erases data: it is not a step in this guide.

6. Check the result and know when to stop

Resume normal use only after cooling and external checks. Record the game, exact message and timing of the incident. Do not repeatedly stress-test the console.

Expected result: vents are clear and no new warning or shutdown occurs during normal use. If the incident repeats, stop testing and use PlayStation Repairs. These checks cannot identify a faulty internal part.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Continuing to play despite a temperature warning.
  • Unplugging the console while its indicator is lit or flashing.
  • Treating every fan noise as a fault.
  • Disassembling the power supply or working on liquid metal during routine checks.
  • Resetting the console or buying a part before distinguishing the symptom.
